La Belle was launched in 1684 and participated, along with three other ships, in the adventurous expedition of the famous explorer René Robert Cavelier, Lord of La Salle. The ultimate aim of the expedition was to establish a French colony at the mouth of the Mississippi River. La Belle was to explore the entire course of the river, starting from the delta near the Gulf of Mexico and then heading upstream to its source.
Although La Belle was designed primarily for river navigation, she crossed the Atlantic Ocean, which at that time was only dared to be attempted on board large sailing ships.
Unfortunately, she ran aground and subsequently sank in the shallows of today’s Matagorda Bay in 1686.
By 1996, the wreck was found and recovered alongside much of the equipment by scholars, archaeologists, and technicians from a University of Texas team.
